Teaching ratio: 1 instructor to 3 students, max 3 students per boat

Minimum age: 8 years old

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 is a fantastic introduction to driving boats for kids aged 8-12. Key elements covered on the course include:

How to drive a boat safely at slow speeds and quickly
How to moor alongside a pontoon or jetty
How to pick up a mooring
Basic ropework and knots
Basic chartwork
Safety equipment, how to use it and why it’s important.
Man overboard rescue procedure

Whilst the RYA Powerboat Level 1 course can be taught in one day, we teach ours over 2 days to ensure that students leave the course armed with enough experience and time behind the wheel. It also allows us to spend some time focusing on certain areas for longer, depending on the needs of the student – we often spend time learning about the specifics of driving safely in the busy Salcombe Harbour as this is often a skill that parents are keen to develop.

We provide all safety equipment, and can provide waterproofs if needed. All we ask is that you come with appropriate footwear (wellies or trainers depending on the weather!) and plenty of water, suncream and lunch!

Note: if you are looking to do a course with your child(ren), the PB1 and PB2 course can be taught simultaneously, with the younger students awarded their Level 1 and older students taught the more complex skills and awarded their PB2 at the end of the two-days.

Minimum participant numbers apply for this activity Please note that we require at least 2 participants to run this activity. If you place a booking for 1 person and nobody else has booked that session, you will receive an email with your booking as 'Pending'. Once someone else books on, your booking will be automatically confirmed. If nobody else books that session, we will get in touch with you to discuss options. Please check before coming if you haven't heard from us!

The date shown in the calendar is the first date of the two-day course. We schedule courses for every weekend during school holidays, but can run courses pretty much any day during the year - if you don't see a date that works for you, please get in touch!
